Unfortunately many men and women have side effects of using the typical over the counter spermicide. Not to mention the uncertain health effects of nonoxynol-9.
Women who would rather avoid chemical spermicides entirely may wish to home-brew their own brand. Lay practitioners have been experimenting with natural alternatives to chemical spermicides for years. Few, if any, medical studies have been conducted on natural spermicides, and it is important to remember that this formula cannot be counted on to prevent pregnancy. However, some women have reported good results with the following recipe:
1 cup water
1 ½ tsp. fresh lemon juice
5 tsp. salt
10 tsp. cornstarch
10 tsp. glycerin
Heat the water, lemon juice and salt in a double boiler until the salt dissolves. Add cornstarch and stir until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and stir in glycerin vigorously. Store in a tightly sealed container in a refrigerator, and use it in the same way you would use a commmercial spermicide. If stored correctly, this spermicide can be kept for up to one month. Remember that spermicide is not an effective method of birth control when used alone. For best results, use in combination with a diaphragm, cervical cap or, particularly if you are concerned about sexually transmitted diseases, a condom.
Thanks to All Women’s Health Services for the recipe.
