As a Naturopathic Physician I am always talking to patients about diet and inflammation. A crucial part of that discussion is the consideration of the many additives found in processed and “flavored” foods. One additive in particular is MSG.
MSG, short for monosodium glutamate, is often added to particular foods to increase the flavor. While it is most often used in Chinese food, it is used in a wide array of other cuisines. Some people are allergic to MSG and consuming it results in uncomfortable physical reactions, commonly known as MSG poisoning.
According to the FDA, MSG Symptom Complex or MSG side effects can result in:
- Burning sensation
- Facial pressure or tightness
- Chest pain
- Rapid heartbeat
- Difficulty breathing for asthmatics
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, do a close examination of what you are eating to see if MSG may be hidden in something you are eating on a regular basis. I highly suggest a diet of exclusion of all food additive to see if your symptoms go away.
