Stress and the Immune System
With the winter season in full swing, now is the time to take preventative steps to keep your immune system vital and strong. One of the ways in which the Immune system is weakened is when there is an increase in stress. Stress can be either a physical stress, such as inflammation from chronic pain, or emotional stress. Emotional stress is caused by work, school or life in general leading us to overextend ourselves. Anytime stress is present, it affects and decreases the optimal functioning of the immune system.
Any of the following can also be caused by stress;
- Decreased Immune function
- Blood sugar dysfunction
- Excessive release of cortisol
- Dominant sympathetic nervous state
- Digestive complaints
- Muscular tension/Headaches

Vitamin D and Immune Health
Forget the apple. The largest study of its kind to date shows that vitamin D each and every day is what will keep the doctor away when it comes to the common cold or the flu.
Vitamin D can be obtained through eating dairy and salmon, and also through daily sunlight exposure. Here in Portland it is best to supplement with Vitamin D October through May, 2-3000 IU’s per day.
Not only is Vitamin D proven to help ward off colds and flus, but it is directly attributed to elevate mood. If you are affected by the wintertime blues, identifying a Vitamin D deficiency could make a positive difference in your life.
Here at The Herb Shoppe we carry high quality Vitamin D in a liquid drop form from Biotics Research. Just one drop is 2000 IU!
